This lush production features an incredible orchestra, jaw-dropping transformations, and all the moments you love—the pumpkin, the glass slipper, the masked ball, and more—plus some surprising new twists! Be transported back to your childhood in this hilarious and romantic Broadway experience for anyone who’s ever had a wish, a dream...or a really great pair of shoes. This contemporary take on the classic tale features Rodgers & Hammerstein's most beloved songs, including “In My Own Little Corner,” “Impossible/It's Possible” and “Ten Minutes Ago,” alongside an up-to-date, hilarious and romantic libretto by Tony Award nominee Douglas Carter Beane.
Originally presented on television in 1957 starring Julie Andrews, Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella was twice remade for television, first in 1965 for Lesley Ann Warren and again in 1997, featuring Brandy and Whitney Houston. The original Broadway production of Rodgers + Hammerstein's Cinderella opened in 2013.
Character Descriptions
ELLA (Cinderella) Kind-hearted, idealistic, charismatic beauty with an infectious generosity of spirit and plenty of humor. Though she has been flying under the radar she comes fully into herself as an articulate dynamic woman with a great deal to say. Traditional musical theatre soprano. [B3 – E-flat 5]
TOPHER The prince of the kingdom leads with heroic bravado but is deeply naïve and not always quick on the draw. In search of his purpose to do something important with his life. His kindhearted nature spills into an endearing goofiness at times. NOT a stereotypical “ladies man.” Light comedic touch is essential. Soaring, rich musical theatre baritenor. [C-sharp 3-A4]
MARIE First presents as a crazy beggar woman but is revealed as Ella’s fairy godmother in disguise. Warm with a spark of wackiness she lifts the magic in the show and highlights what is possible! Soaring traditional musical theatre soprano. [A3-A-flat 5]
MADAME Ella’s selfish stepmother. Vain, tyrannical, deeply concerned with status and image, and entirely dismissive of her stepdaughter. She is trying to scheme her way up the social ladder. Comic timing is essential. Traditional musical theatre character voice. [C4-D5]
GABRIELLE Ella’s stepsister and daughter of Madame. Begins aligned with her materialistic mother and sister but her kindness and thoughtful nature emerge as she is affected by Ella and her love interest John-Michel. Perhaps a bit quirky and cut from a different mold than the social climbers around her, she is ironically aware that she doesn’t fit in. Comic timing is essential. Strong and expressive traditional musical theatre voice. [C4-G5]
CHARLOTTE Ella’s stepsister and daughter of Madame. Deeply self-involved, attention seeker. LOUD, brash, materialistic, sassy, bratty, and cocky. Lacks self-awareness and is often the last one in on the joke. Excellent comic timing is required. Traditional musical theatre character belt to F. [B3-F5]
JEAN-MICHEL An enthusiastic revolutionary determined to make a difference. An impetuous firebrand who lacks authority and isn’t always taken seriously, yet energized and on his way to becoming a leader. Has a crush on Gabrielle. Great comic timing. Traditional musical theatre voice. [C3-G4]
SEBASTIAN Topher’s Lord Chancellor. He deviously shields the Prince from what is occurring in his kingdom and revels in maintaining his own power. Disregarding villagers in need, he is primarily concerned with preserving the wealthy and the reach of his power. Fantastic comic timing is essential. Traditional musical theatre character voice. [C3-F4]
LORD PINKELTON Sebastian’s second-in-command and the herald for all balls and events. Announces royal balls, banquets, and even the weather. Excellent comic timing is essential. Traditional musical theatre tenor. [D3-A4]
